Meet the Presidents

As a departure from the usual SACE President's message in this space, with the progress being made toward a possible merger of SACE and SWACE, we would like to present of profile of the two Presidents, Jeff Wetherald of SACE and Matt Berndt of SWACE. Each President was asked the same interview questions, and here are their responses:

SACE

Name Jeff Wetherald
Employer The Sherwin-Williams Company
Position Title Training Manager
Length of regional ACE membership SACE member since 2000
Leadership positions in your current ACE organization

  • 2003 Conference Committee- Local Arrangements
  • 2004 Conference Committee Co-Chair (Employer)
  • 2005 President-Elect
  • 2006 President

What do you like most about this organization? First and foremost, the people I've come to know and work with. I’d be a much smaller person had I not had the opportunity to work with such gifted people. We are very fortunate to have such a depth of talent to draw from for our great organization.

What are your goals for the merger between SACE & SWACE? To form an organization that will listen to its constituents, identify current and future trends in demographics and economies, and then develop methods to exceed those needs.
How are you preparing for the merger? By working closely with Matt and the SWACE team to use the original merger task force recommendations to move forward, while not throwing out our brain.
Tell us your favorite tradition in your current regional ACE organization. Each state President gives away a “State Basket” as a raffle item at the annual conference. The State Basket reflects the flavor, if you will, of the state. For example: GA-Peaches; TN-bourbon might find it’s way into the basket; FL – oranges; SC-cookbooks from Charleston; LA-Tabasco sauce; MS-cheese. And this is only one small way we involve our state organizations with SACE.
Share with us something interesting about yourself that the folks in SWACE or SACE may not know yet. I’ve been married 32 years, all to the same woman, have three wonderful children and support the entire University of Georgia University system. My oldest son, 27, graduated from the University of Georgia, my daughter, 21, is a senior at Georgia State, and my youngest son, 19, is a Freshman at Georgia Southern University.

Jeff Wetherald, The Sherwin-Williams Company

SWACE

Name Matt Berndt
Employer University of Texas at Austin, College of Communication
Position Title Director, Communication Career Services
Length of regional ACE membership I first joined SWACE in 1993 (my first conference was the 1994 conference in Overland Park KS. I left Texas and returned to California in 1996 (was a member of WACE while with the University of Southern California) and returned to SWACE in 2000. All told I have been an active member of SWACE for around nine years during the period of 1993 to the present. I also joined SACE in 2005 to learn more about the organization.
Leadership positions in your current ACE organization

  • SWACE President for 2006-07
  • President-Elect in 2005-06
  • Treasurer in 2003-04 and 2004-05
  • Strategic Planning Committee Chair in 2004-05 and 2003-04
  • Strategic Planning Committee Co-Chair in 2002-03
  • Strategic Planning Committee member in 2001-02.

What do you like most about this organization? SWACE has a great personality and we get good things done! Whether we are working hard (which we do) or playing hard (which we do, also!) we always have a smile on our face. Our members and leaders are passionate about our profession and about the association, and we are not afraid to share our opinions. When we gather for a meeting or a conference we are really happy to see each other. While we don’t always agree on everything, we value each other's input and respect each other's positions. With this approach, generally good things happen. I guess that’s what I like best – in SWACE, good things happen.
What are your goals for the merger between SACE & SWACE? My hope is that we will be able to bring the best of both SACE and SWACE together to form the new Southern Association of Colleges and Employers. In terms of processes, procedures, best practices, management, people and ideas, SACE brings so much to the table, and I want to make sure this gets incorporated into the new association. Likewise, SWACE has a great deal to offer in those same areas, and I want to make sure this gets incorporated into the new association as well. Both organizations can learn a lot from each other and the net result will be an association with tremendous strengths.
How are you preparing for the merger? We have assembled an outstanding Merger Task Force. President-Elect Kasey Arceri, Past Presidents Randy Wilson and Tony Magaro and Treasurer Steve Markert are working with a team of SACE leaders (Tracy Powers, Karen Thompson, Patsy Hammett and Patricia Blum) to drive the process. Jeff and I reviewed the recommendations of the last Merger Task Force, made our recommendations to the current Merger Task Force, and asked them to propose a timeline, manage the process of implementation, and keep us informed of their progress at regular intervals so that we can keep our boards and membership informed. At this point, my goal is to stay out of their way, offer them my support and input as they need it, and share their recommendations with the board and the SWACE membership in a timely and effective manner. In short, I want to do whatever is needed to make the Merger Task Force’s job easier.
Tell us your favorite tradition in your current regional ACE organization That would have to be the Young Professionals Award. I think it is great when we recognize the new and developing leaders in our association. I really think that developing young professionals in career services and recruiting should always be central to our mission and purpose. The more we can do to get new professionals engaged in our profession and our associations, the more successful we will be as associations.
Share with us something interesting about yourself that the folks in SWACE or SACE may not know yet Many folks don’t know this, but Jeff and I hail from the same home town – Rochester NY. In addition, I have traveled through Germany three times as the front man for a German Oktoberfest Band (from New York). I’ve been married to my wife Melissa for nearly 15 years; we have two daughters, Tess (9) and Jillian (7), a 20 pound Pug name Charlotte and a 100 pound yellow lab named Rocket. While I work at UT, I am a graduate of the University of Southern California (so I wasn’t as excited about the result of the Rose Bowl as you might have expected!).

Florida

On August 10 & 11 we held our Florida Career Professionals Association (FCPA) fall Board meeting. Traditionally we hold this meeting at the site of the upcoming conference. This gives us the opportunity to tour the facility and meet with our event coordinator. Dona Gaynor from Florida Institute of Technology is our Vice President and 2007 conference chair. She is already busy developing the menu, assembling committees and creating the conference theme and logo. Since the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort is our site, it’s almost obligatory to have a racing or NASCAR theme. During some of the lighter moments at the recent Board meeting we brainstormed about remote controlled car races and NASCAR jacket decorating contests. We’re all looking forward to another great FCPA conference next June 27-29.

I’m sorry to announce that our FCPA Information Manager, Matt Cardin, has accepted a new job in the Boston area. We wish him much success and will sorely miss his devotion to FCPA and the Board. Our Past President, Mike Tooke, and I are busy with the search for a replacement. As several of the Board members scramble to fill in, we truly appreciate how important this position is to our organization.

We recently polled our members to see how best to move forward with our goal of keeping the conference food and beverage costs down. We work hard to keep our conference fees down while still providing great meals and refreshment breaks. As many of you probably know, this is no small task. I am pleased to say that many of our members took time to respond with their thoughts and suggestions. Many commented about how much great networking occurs during these conference meals. All suggestions will be compiled and used as we finalize the menu for 2007 and begin to plan for conference 2008. If any of you have tackled this challenge and want to share your insight I would love to hear from you. My e-mail is gatchd@mccfl.edu.

Due to travel budget restraints, I will not have the pleasure of attending the upcoming SACE conference. Mike Tooke will be there to represent FCPA. He is a veteran at this and will not only represent us well but will also thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to network with all of his SACE friends. I look forward to a report from Mike at our next Board meeting in January. FCPA truly values our close relationship with SACE and wishes you a very successful conference.

Georgia

So far, 2006 has been a very busy year for GACE and its members!

GACE finished the school year in April with another fantastic statewide career fair. Our 2nd annual College-to-Career Fair showcased more than 150 employers and connected them to over 800 students from across the state. This GACE sponsored event provided employers with “Just the Right Candidate…at Just the Right Time.”

Our 2006 GACE Conference was held in mid-May this year at Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons Island and what a great time we all had! Our theme was “Navigating the Career Jungle” which was facilitated by professional development sessions and exciting networking opportunities, including a Survival Team Trivia Challenge at the closing banquet.

As for the upcoming year, the Board of Directors and Committee Chairs have already been brainstorming new ways to continue to develop GACE. I began my tenure as GACE President in August following some unusual circumstances (as I was originally slated for President Elect.) However, with the assistance and guidance of our past President and other long-time GACErs, I was able to hit the ground running and begin transitioning our new Board and Committee chairs into their respective roles.

We have already begun planning our year by building on the successes of our past presidents. We intend to focus on developing and growing our membership, enhancing our technology, and providing outstanding networking events. Based on what I’ve seen so far, we have just the right group of individuals to turn these goals into realities.

  • Our new year will include events such as:
  • Fall Networking Breakfast – The theme is “Bring a Friend” to encourage current members to bring new potential members.
  • Annual Drive-In Workshop
  • 3rd Annual College-to-Career Fair – scheduled for April 10, 2007
  • Braves Networking Events
  • 2007 GACE Conference - June 4 -7, 2007 at Brasstown Valley Resort

Last, but certainly not least, GACE will be one of the sponsors this year for the opening conference event at the 2006 SACE Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. We look forward to seeing you there!

Three NCACE Members Honored at 2006 Conference

Each year, NCACE members honor fellow members and member organizations with three awards presented during the annual conference. This year, the awards were presented during the opening session of the NCACE 2006 Annual Conference held in Atlantic Beach in May.

The Furney K. James Outstanding Service Award recognizes outstanding service rendered to NCACE by a member or former member of the association. The recipient of this year’s award was Dana Sumner, Associate Director of Employer Relations at the Meredith College Career Center.

Dana has held a variety of leadership positions within NCACE, most recently serving on the 2005-2006 Executive Committee as a College Representative and Conference Co-Chair. She is also a past recipient of the North Carolina Career Development Association’s New Professional Award. Anyone who has met Dana can attest to her professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication to her students and the Association.

Dr. Marie Sumerel, Director of Career Services with Meredith College was recognized by NCACE as the Outstanding Professional for 2006. Dr. Sumerel has 27 years of experience in the field of Career Development, Counseling and Leadership. Her experience is vast and includes work at small colleges, large universities as well as consulting and work in corporations. She is recognized as a publisher of career development related articles, a presenter at many regional and national conferences and was the first college career professional in North Carolina to develop and implement an internet-based career development course.

The NCACE Outstanding Employer Award recognizes a company for its support of NCACE. This year’s recipient was Duke Energy. Scott Jolley and Holly Woodson accepted the award on behalf of the company.

Duke Energy is a long-time member and steadfast supporter of the Association. Over the many years of supporting its employees’ membership in the Association, Duke Energy and its team members have contributed to the growth, leadership and success of NCACE. Employees of Duke Energy have served NCACE in positions that include conference committee leadership and executive board members. Congratulations to all of the award recipients!

Membership

Fellow members of SACE; it gives me great pleasure to serve you in the capacity of the Vice President for Membership. As your representative, I promise to do my very best in representing you on the executive board. We have one major challenge ahead and that is increasing membership. We have identified three initiatives in our efforts to increase membership.

  • First, we would like to target employers who attend career fairs and participate in the on-campus recruitment programs.
  • Secondly, graduate students who participate in Counseling and Higher Education Programs.
  • Thirdly, the committee will be reviewing the membership list to identify and contact those individuals who have discontinued their membership.

Over the next several months, career center directors will be called upon to assist us in increasing employer membership by soliciting their employers who participate in career fairs and on-campus recruitment programs. Additionally, colleges and universities who have graduate Counseling and Higher Education programs will be targeted for membership. As you know, many individuals in our profession come from the Counseling and Higher Education programs and it seems reasonable that we should pursue those individuals for membership in our association. Marcia Harris, Director of Career Services, University of North Carolina (CH), suggested that we explore the graduate counseling program and we thought the suggestion was a great idea. Additional information will be sent out in the very near future about these three initiatives. If you have any suggestions or recommendations about increasing membership, please feel free to contact me at (757) 823-8462 or ndmontgomery@nsu.edu.
