The President's Pen
This President’s message was particularly difficult
to write. There is a tremendous amount of excitement within
the organization regarding our upcoming conference and the
potential merger with SWACE. Yet, we have members who are
struggling with personal and professional anguish due to the
recent hurricanes. It is a bittersweet time of reflection.
It is a time when many of us contemplate how we can make
meaningful contributions to those in need. It is a time when
some people evaluate their priorities and how they want to
use their time and resources. It is also during these times
that others consider all that they are thankful to enjoy about
their lives.
Ironically, both keynote speakers selected for the annual
conference address topics that directly relate to reflection.
They will remind us to assess how our unique commitments and
talents can impact others. Gregg Levoy, author of Callings:
Finding and Following an Authentic Life, will create self-dialogue
about how well we have selected our life’s course. Dr.
Pedro Joe Greer, Jr., who has made a direct, positive impact
on thousands of homeless people, is sure to inspire us to
question how we wish to make a difference.
These keynote speakers, our interactions with one another
at the SACE conference, and various breakout sessions are
likely to help us address familiar issues with renewed perspective.
Whether we are trying to determine how to contribute to our
professional association, the right career path, or the priorities
in our personal lives, this conference is sure to be a unique
experience due to the broad issues we are facing.

Plan

Speaker Gregg Levoy will call on you to create passionate,

Speaker Dr. Jose Greer will inspire the audience members to
create change in their own communities. By putting a human
face on poverty and urging us to take responsibility, he proves
that hope exists for every person. Dr. Greer is a living,
spirited testimony to the difference one committed individual
can make in the lives of others.
In addition to our keynote speakers, the Conference Committee
listened to you and what YOU
wanted to gain from this year’s conference. The Programs
Committee received one of the best responses ever to a call
for proposals, and we guarantee it is reflective of what the
SACE membership desires and expects. We will continue to offer
the Emerging Leaders and Masters

How is SACE helping
hurricane victims?
SACE members have been busy working on ways
we can support members impacted by recent hurricanes. Exciting
plans are in place for the following:
All Resource Room materials will be equally distributed to
Career Centers that sustained damage to their print resources.
Resource Room Co-Chairs are Meredith Gaile, Sun Trust Bank,
meredith.gaile@suntrust.com
and Don Cornwell, Emory University, dcornwe@emory.edu.
The SACE Scholarship Fund has designated a special portion
of the account to support conference attendance for SACE members
impacted by the hurricanes. If you know of members in this
situation, please let them know we are offering a limited
number of paid registration fees. For more information, they
may contact Saranette Williams, VP for Consulting Services,
at saranettewilliams@crc.ufl.edu.
Special Breakout Session. Watch for this session in the conference
brochure you receive on-site. The Programming Committee has
developed a panel session. Employers and Career Centers who
had to respond to these unprecedented disasters will talk
about strategies their organizations used to provide assistance
to their employers and constituents. Special thanks go to
John Adams and Patricia Blum for organizing this effort.

Career
Kick-Off
The Toppel Career Center at the University of
Miami hosted its Career Kick-Off on September 17, 2005. This
event was sponsored by Target and was geared toward juniors
and seniors. The day started with a keynote address, Finding
the Meaning in Your Work, from Tracy Knofla of High Impact
Training. Employers from Capital One, Daimler Chrysler, Ernst
& Young, Lennar Corporation, Target, and TEK Systems facilitated
numerous sessions including Power Networking, Marketing Your
Leadership Experience, and Successful Compensation Negotiations.
This event was an excellent opportunity for students to network
with potential employers in a semi-professional setting. Students
were treated to an Etiquette Luncheon, where they were able
to hone their skills in an interactive manner. Career Kick-Off
is an outstanding example of collaboration between the career
development and employer relations areas of the Toppel Career
Center.

SACE / SWACE
Merger Update
By now, you have likely received an email regarding the outcome
of the merger vote of confidence. Both memberships strongly
support the move forward with working toward implementation
of a merger. Note that this does not mean we are now one organization.
Much work has to be done to propose potential structure, bylaws
and a name for a new organization. If the memberships approve
such a proposal, we will become one organization. Read more

A Big SACE Congratulations:
The University of Tennessee
welcomes...
Russ Coughenour as the new Career Services Director,
as of August 1, 2005.
Russ began his career in higher education by returning to
graduate school at the age of 27 to obtain his Masters in
Student Personnel Administration from Marshall University
in Huntington, West Virginia. Upon graduating, Russ searched
for Career Services positions in the Southeast and ended up
at Augusta College (now Augusta State University) in Augusta,
Georgia. Russ spent the next 10 years in Augusta working under
the direction of Dr. Diane Fennig. Russ worked his way up
to the Director position in the 1998-1999 academic year. “I
couldn’t have hand-picked a better place to gain experience,”
Russ has often said to others. Russ then moved on to The University
of Tampa in Tampa, Florida, as Director in May 1999. “Learning
things from the private school perspective was rewarding;
The University of Tampa’s commitment to student service
was impressive and it was important for me to experience.”
Russ recently joined the staff at The University of Tennessee
and became only the third Director of Career Services here
in the last 50 years. “Replacing Dr. Robert Greenberg
is the single greatest professional challenge I am likely
to face. The good news is that I have a welcoming, dedicated
staff and an extremely supportive environment.”

SACE
Board Change Announcement
Due to her forced displacement after Hurricane
Katrina and the uncertainty of how long that displacement
will last, Carolyn Thomas resigned from her position as SACE
Vice President of Membership. This was a very difficult decision
for Carolyn, who has a long history of making significant
contributions to the organization. Her dedication, creativity
and thoughtful work will be missed. Carolyn is working hard
to join us in Miami. I hope you will see her there and thank
her for all she has done.
For the remainder of this board term, through June 30, 2006,
Mary Mahoney from the University of Tennessee will serve as
Vice President of Membership. Many of you know Mary since
she has served in many SACE leadership roles. Her prior board
experience as Vice President of Membership made her an exellent
candidate to step into the position and make an immediate
impact. Her knowledge of SACE history will also be invaluable
as we consider merger issues throughout the year. Please welcome
Mary to the Board.

In
this issue of SCOOP, we are pleased to highlight Lindsay Seaborn,
SCOOP Content Editor, University of Florida.
Where are you from, and what is your educational background?
I grew up in Greenville, SC, and my family still resides there
today. I moved to the great town of Athens, GA to attend The

Administration in Marketing. GO
DAWGS! I continued my education at Indiana
University, receiving a Master of Science in Higher Education
and Student Affairs. My minor was Athletic Administration.
How long have you been in the field?
I have been in student affairs for about three and a half
years. Initially, I worked in financial aid at Indiana University.
I came to the University of Florida Career Resource Center
in June 2004. As Assistant Director for Employer Relations
& Special Projects, my primary job responsibilities include
managing job postings on Gator CareerLink, developing employer

the liaison to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. My
two special constituencies are Athletics and Greek Life.
What are your hobbies?
In my spare time, I enjoy watching college sports and traveling.

the country. Also, I volunteer as the Alumna Advisor to the
Florida chapter of Delta Delta Delta.
What do you like about your job?
I enjoy being a liaison between employers and job-seeking
students. It is so rewarding to help facilitate the job search

Regional Roundup ...
Reports from the States
Florida
Let me begin this update on our association by saying that
our thoughts and prayers have been, and remain with SACE members
who were adversely affected by the ravages of Katrina and
Rita. As SACE members are aware, we in Florida can relate
to the many challenges and heartaches as a result of the devastation
caused by hurricanes.
Our Board of Directors assembled at the Renaissance Vinoy
Hotel in St. Petersburg in August for our Fall Board meeting.
During our meetings, we reviewed our membership, financial
status, information services, and went over the after-action
reports from our 2005 conference. One of the highlights of
the meeting was a presentation by Ray Rogers, our Information
Manager, on our archive project. Ray and Christy King, our
Past President, have organized and placed on our website,
for access by our leadership, a vast amount of FCPA historical
and planning information. We also established our goals for
the upcoming year, set our budget, and did some preliminary
planning and a site tour in preparation for our 2006 FCPA
annual conference, scheduled for June 28-30 at the Vinoy.
At this meeting, the Board also voted a lifetime membership
in our association for Grady McClendon, former Director of
Career Services at Webber International University, and an
individual who has served in many leadership positions with
FCPA over the years. Many of you know Grady, and that he is
also a past recipient of our highest award, The John T. Brownlee
Leadership award.
Speaking of the Brownlee Leadership award, I was remiss in
my Summer update article in SCOOP in not recognizing the individual
who received this award at our 2005 conference, Jonathan Thornburg.
Many of you know “JT” as well, not only as a member
of SACE, but also from his many visits to your campuses while
working in campus relations and recruiting for Office Depot
during the past few years. JT now serves as the Director of
Staffing for Hughes Supply, and like Grady, he served in a
variety of leadership positions with FCPA, to include two
terms as our President. Well deserved JT; we are proud of
you.
Our next newsletter is scheduled to come out in mid-November,
and may be accessed at this link, http://www.fl-cpa.org/newsletter.html.
Our next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for January
19 – 20, when Andrea Alfano, who was selected as the
Director of Career Services at Webber International University
following Grady’s retirement, will host our visit. At
this meeting Dee Dee Gatch, our VP and 2006 conference planning
chairperson, will let us know how plans are progressing. Come
December, I, along with several others from Florida, will
join you at the SACE Conference in Miami. We look forward
to visiting with old friends.
In closing, it is my pleasure to share with you the names
of those serving in leadership positions this year. Here is
our 2005-2006 Slate of Officers for the Florida Career Professionals
Association:
Mike Tooke, University of South Florida – President
Dee Dee Gatch, Manatee Community College – Vice-President

Information Management
Soon, you will receive a survey through SACE
from the Information Management Task Force Team. Skip Hunt
with our SACE Administrative office, Scott Maynard with Mississippi
State
University, Myrna Hoover with Florida State University, Mark
Hunter with
Virginia Tech, Kate Williams with Clemson University, and
I developed the survey.
These folks have done a marvelous and thoughtful job preparing
this survey. This team has invested a great amount of time
during the last few weeks in developing the survey. You can
certainly appreciate the value of your colleagues’ contributions,
considering how busy this time of year is when students are
returning to school.
Your feedback will be very important to us as we analyze
the survey results and plan the improvements for the Member
Resources area of our website. Please take a few minutes and
respond to the survey when you receive it. You will be helping
us provide better resources for you and SACE. We will be sharing
our progress with you during our conference in December. I
look forward to seeing you there.
I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Skip Hunt for his
time and effort working on all the small problems with our
revised website, coordinating the Information Technology issues
to support the Miami Conference Team, establishing a BLOG
for us to share information regarding our friends on the Gulf
Coast, and guiding the Information Task Force Team through
our survey development. Technology is such a wonderful tool
when everything is goes well and so frustrating when it does
not. I appreciate your help and expertise, Skip.

Ft. Lauderdale Drive-in Workshop as Pre-Conference
Workshop for SEFRC Conference
The SACE Drive-in Workshop, held in July in Ft. Lauderdale
as a pre-conference workshop for the Southeastern Federal
Recruiting Council Conference, was quite a success. The theme
was “Employer Relations 101 – Bridging the Gap.”
The topics covered included: employers’ needs and expectations
for college recruiting, current recruiting and staffing methods
being used to recruit new college hires and alumni, and the
resources currently available at various institutions to facilitate
college recruiting for employers. Many thanks go to Saranette
Miles Williams (University of Florida) and Mary
Jane Suarez (University of Central Florida) for organizing
and facilitating this great workshop. Our thanks also are
extended to Christian Garcia (University
of Miami) and Teresita Saladin (Enterprise
Rent-A-Car) for leading a panel discussion with the group.
A total of 21 employers participated, and positive comments
were made about this workshop throughout the SEFRC Conference.
We are planning to partner with SEFRC again in 2006 for their
conference to be held in Savannah. Anyone with ideas for future
drive-in workshops – topics, locations, and dates (other
than next summer) – we welcome your input!
Expertise Directory Project Still Underway
– Survey coming
Ruby Brown-Herring (Duke University) continues to
work on a project to develop an Expertise Directory of the
SACE membership. Please watch for the email about this survey,
coming soon from the SACE office. We want everyone to participate,
as ALL SACE members have expertise in many areas, we know!
Leadership Development and Training Subcommittee:
Working on Plans for Next Webinar
As a result of the evaluations from the June Webinar, it is
evident that SACE members like being able to complete certain
professional development activities without leaving their
offices. We are working on plans for another webinar to take
place in late October or early November. Plans were put on
the back burner temporarily, with the concern for Hurricane
Katrina destruction, but we are picking up again with plans
for a webinar. Watch for details to come via email. Your ideas
on topics and/or presenters are always welcome!
State Liaison Subcommittee: Denisha
Sanders, Chair (UNC-Pembroke)
Denisha Sanders is working on getting updates from all
of the current SACE state presidents concerning conference
dates and other activities that the state associations would
like to share. This information is being updated on the SACE
website as it is received. Current state president information
is available on the website as well.
New Volunteer Chair!
I am pleased to announce that Hester Young
(Charleston Southern University) has graciously agreed to
serve as the Volunteer Chair for SACE. THANK YOU, HESTER!!
Among other needs, Hester is currently working with the Conference
Committee to fulfill all of their needs for volunteers. If
you would like to serve as a volunteer for the conference
in Miami in December, please contact Hester as soon as possible,
by phone at (843) 863-8019 or by e-mail at hyoung@csuniv.edu.
If you like, click

Emerging Leaders Subcommittee: Melanie
Parker, Chair (University of Central Florida)
Since the summer edition of SCOOP, Melanie Parker has
taken the Emerging Leaders Program on the road even more.
She held an informational session about the Emerging Leaders
Program during the Eastern ACE Conference in August, which
was well received. We are continuing to reach out to ALL state
associations for inclusion in their programming.
Masters’ Series Subcommittee: Marcia
Harris, Chair (UNC-Chapel Hill)
With the Emerging Leaders Program well underway, we now
move on to developing the Masters’ Series. The purpose
of this complementary programming project is to involve management
level SACE members as workshop/ seminar presenters. We are
pleased that several exciting sessions will be offered during

terrorist attacks on our country. Media coverage for both
devastating events took my mind back to where I was on September
11, 2001 – working on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
After working only four months as a staff assistant to a U.S.
Congressman, I found myself experiencing terrorism first-hand.
My world view changed overnight.
The glorious capital city had been full of life all summer,
and then the excitement came to a screeching halt. The feelings
in Washington, New York and throughout the country in 2001
were much the same as those in the Gulf Coast area now –
horror at the loss of life, fear of what might happen yet,
and sadness from the visible devastation on our home land.
All that enables us to persevere is our hope for the unseen
and determination to make the world a better place.
It is said that suffering produces endurance, and endurance
produces character. We have seen the truth of this statement
in the aftermath of Katrina. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring
of support for hurricane victims through money, time, and
gifts, including new places for evacuees to live and work.
Personally, I am proud of how our SACE community has expressed
concern for our members. We will continue to keep our SACE
friends from the Gulf Coast area in our thoughts and prayers.
